Concept explainers
Two loudspeakers, 4.0 m apart and facing each other, play identical sounds of the same frequency. You stand halfway between them, where there is a maximum of sound intensity. Moving from this point toward one of the speakers, you encounter a minimum of sound intensity when you have moved 0.25 m.
a. What is the frequency of the sound?
b. If the frequency is then increased while you remain 0.25 m from the center, what is the first frequency for which that location will be a maximum of sound intensity?

They hold the tube vertically and fill it with water to the top, then lower the water while a 256—Hz tuning fork is rung and listen for the first resonance. - (a) At an air show a jet flies directly toward the stands at a speed of 1200 km/h, emitting a frequency of 3500 Hz, on a day when the speed of sound is 342 m/s. What frequency is received by the observers? (b) What frequency do they receive as the plane flies directly away from them?arrow_forwardWhy is the following situation impossible? Two identical loudspeakers are driven by the same oscillator at frequency 200 Hz. They are located on the ground a distance d = 4.00 m from each other. Starting far from the speakers, a man walks straight toward the right-hand speaker as shown in Figure P17.4. After passing through three minima in sound intensity, he walks to the next maximum and stops. Ignore any sound reflection from the ground. Figure P17.4arrow_forwardAn air column in a glass tube is open at one end and closed at the other by a movable piston. The air in the tube is warmed above room temperature, and a 384-Hz tuning fork is held at the open end. Resonance is heard when the piston is at a distance d1 = 22.8 cm from the open end and again when it is at a distance d2= 68.3 cm from the open end. (a) What speed of sound is implied by these data?
