Section 2.3 What determines whether a solution is acidic or basic?
To determine:
The classification of a solution is either acidic or basic.
Introduction:
In general, aqueous solutions may be divided into three categories based on the pH. They are the acidic, basic and neutral solutions. With a pH of 7.0, a solution is classified to be neutral whereas the pH is less than 7.0, the solution is considered to be acidic. When the pH of the solution is higher than 7.0 it is called as basic.
Explanation of Solution
Acidity and alkalinity of solution can be determined by the concentration of H+ in the solution. Acidic solutions have a high concentration of proton ions (H+). The basic solutions will have a low H+ concentration and a higher OH- concentration. An acid is any proton donor. A base is any proton acceptor.
Solution can be categorized as acidic, basic, or neutral based on the pH of the solution.
