Concept introduction: In a dividing cell, the cell cycle consists of the interphase and mitotic (M) phase. The interphase includes G1 phase, S phase (synthesis), and G2 phase. Through these phases, a cell grows within the DNA replication and divides into daughter cells. During S phase, also known as DNA synthesis phase, the DNA replication occurs.

6. Complete the cellular detail for each phase as you observe it in the whitefish cells. Below each drawing , note what is happening to the DNA (chromatin, chromatids, chromosomes)
MAKE CONNECTIONS Review Figure 12.16 on cell cyclecontrol. Would you expect MPF (maturation-promotingfactor) activity to remain steady during cleavage? Explain.
MAKE CONNECTIONS Look at Figure 12.7 and imagine the twodaughter cells undergoing another round of mitosis, yielding four cells.Compare the number of chromosomes in each of those four cells, aftermitosis, with the number in each cell in Figure 13.8, after meiosis. Whatis it about the process of meiosis that accounts for this difference, eventhough meiosis also includes two cell divisions?
