How the compound shown (p-aminobenzoic acid) can be synthesized from benzene is to be shown.
Concept introduction:
Benzene can be converted into alkyl benzenes by the Friedal-Crafts alkylation reaction. The alkyl group when nitrated directs the nitro group into ortho & para positions to yield nitroalkylbenzenes. The para isomer is favored as it is strain free. Oxidation of the alkyl group in the nitro alkyl benzene with KMnO4 will yield the acid required.
