Ultrasound is used in medicine both for diagnostic imaging (Fig. P17.9, page 526) and for therapy. For diagnosis, short pulses of ultrasound are passed through the patient’s body. An echo reflected from a structure of interest is recorded, and the distance to the structure can be determined from the time delay for the echo’s return. To reveal detail, the wavelength of the reflected ultrasound must be small compared to the size of the object reflecting the wave. The speed of ultrasound in human tissue is about 1 500 m/s (nearly the same as the speed of sound in water). (a) What is the wavelength of ultrasound with a frequency of 2.40 MHz? (b) In the whole set of imaging techniques, frequencies in the range 1.00 MHz to 20.0 MHz are used. What is the range of wavelengths corresponding to this range of frequencies?

- The equation of a harmonic wave propagating along a stretched string is represented by y(x, t) = 4.0 sin (1.5x 45t), where x and y are in meters and the time t is in seconds. a. In what direction is the wave propagating? be. N What are the b. amplitude, c. wavelength, d. frequency, and e. propagation speed of the wave?arrow_forwardA siren emits a sound of frequency 1.44103 Hz when it is stationary with respect to an observer. The siren is moving away from a person and toward a cliff at a speed of 15 m/s. Both the cliff and the observer are at rest. Assume the speed of sound in air is 343 m/s. What is the frequency of the sound that the person will hear a. coming directly from the siren and b. reflected from the cliff?arrow_forwardReview. A tuning fork vibrating at 512 Hz falls from rest and accelerates at 9.80 m/s2. How far below the point of release is the tuning fork when waves of frequency 485 Hz reach the release point?arrow_forward
- A sound wave in air has a pressure amplitude equal to 4.00 103 Pa. Calculate the displacement amplitude of the wave at a frequency of 10.0 kHz.arrow_forwardOn a 20°C°C night, a bat hovering in the air emits an ultrasonic chirp that has a frequency of 45 kHzkHz. It hears an echo 60 msms later. Suppose the object is an insect flying straight away from the bat. What is the insect's speed if the ultrasonic echo is shifted down in frequency by 750 Hz?arrow_forwardA sound wave with intensity 2 x 10 -3 W/m2 is perceived to be modestly loud. Your eardrum is 6 mm in diameter. How much energy will be transferred to your eardrum while listening to this sound for 1 minute?arrow_forward
- Bats emit ultrasonic waves with a frequency as high as 1.70 × 105 Hz. What is the wavelength of an ultrasonic wave with frequency 1.70 × 105 Hz in air of temperature 10.9°C? The speed of sound in air at 0°C is v = 331 m/s (see Table 12.1).arrow_forwardA bat can detect small objects, such as an insect, whose size is approximately equal to one wavelength of the sound the bat makes. If bats emit a chirp at a frequency of 64.0 kHz, and if the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s, what is the smallest insect a bat can detect?arrow_forwardthe human ear tends to be most sensitive to sound frequencies of 3 khz. the sound intensity at this frequency is usually measured as 3x10-13 w/m2. how much energy is transported by this type of sound wave to the eardrum (surface area of about 50mm2 ) in 200msarrow_forward
- There was an accident and NASA engineers are trying to sort out where two of their Mars Rovers (named 'Tango' and 'Foxtrot') have landed. The engineers know that landing site A is much hotter than landing site B. Unfortunately, the only working sensors on Tango and Foxtrot measure the speed of sound. If Tango measures the speed of sound at its landing site as 240 m/s, while Foxtrot measures speed of sound as 258 m/s at its landing site, where has each rover landed? Tango landed at site A while Foxtrot landed at site B. Tango landed at site B while Foxtrot landed at site A. Both Tango and Foxtrot landed at site A. O Both Tango and Foxtrot landed at site B.arrow_forwardA sound wave traveling in air has a frequency f and wavelength λ. A second sound wave traveling in air has wavelength λ/ 2. What is the frequency of the second sound wave?arrow_forwardSome studies suggest that the upper frequency limit of hearing is determined by the diameter of the eardrum. The wavelength of the sound wave and the diameter of the eardrum are approximately equal at this upper limit. If the relationship holds exactly, what is the diameter of the eardrum of a person capable of hearing 2.00 x 104 Hz? (Assume a body temperature of 37.0°C.)arrow_forward
