To determine: The reason for which the pregnant women are instructed to not to take or even handle the drugs of 5-α-reductase inhibitors.
Introduction: Pregnancy or gestation is the period during which offspring develops within a woman. In humans, pregnancy is nearly nine months long, divided into three trimesters.
Explanation of Solution
The blood from the mother to the developing baby passes through the placenta. It carries the oxygen, glucose, and other nutrients to the developing baby. When the pregnant consume or handle the 5-α-reductase inhibitor drugs, it can be absorbed in the pregnant women’s blood and it crosses the placenta to enter the fetal circulation. They may block the dihydrotestosterone production in target tissues of the developing baby with the activity of 5-α-reductase. As a result, it interfere the normal development of the sexual structures such as, scrotum, penis, and prostate in male fetus. This is a reason for which the pregnant women are instructed to not to handle these drugs.
