Introduction:
The stomach provides various functions in the digestion of food. The stomach causes secretion of acids and enzymes that digest the foods. Food enters into the stomach and mixes with the gastric juice.
The stomach also functions in the absorption of food transports to the small intestine for more absorption. Parietal cells of the gastric glands cause the secretion of hydrochloric acid that maintains the acid environment in the stomach. Mucous cells of the gastric glands secrete mucus. It provides a viscous, alkaline inner lining of the stomach that is a protective layer.
Subtotal gastrectomy is the process that involves the surgical removal of all parts of the stomach from the body. It is used for the treatment of certain illness such as severe ulcers and stomach cancers.
