Interpretation:

The working of the given cancer drugs is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Cancer cells are same as the normal cells of a human being or in fact, it can be said that that they are the modified mutant forms of human cells. The healthy cells get mutated by getting exposed to carcinogenic thins, and harmful irradiations.

Anti-cancer agents kill both normal cells and cancer cells. The cancer cells format a faster rate than normal cells.

Explanation of Solution

a) Alkylating agents

Alkylating agents, as the name suggests, add alkyl groups to other biological molecules. They add alkyl groups to DNA, thus creating a defect in the DNA, which leads to the eradication of cells. The example of a majorly used alkylating agent is cyclophosphamide (nitrogen mustard).

b) Antimetabolites

Antimetabolites are the chemical impostors. It means that they copy the compounds found in a cell but they have certain differences because of which the DNA synthesis stops and the cell stops replicating. For example, methotrexate is an impostor for folic acid. It binds to the enzyme that converts folic acid to the building blocks of DNA and without this, the cell cannot replicate.
