Concept introduction:
Mycobacterium causes the respiratory disease tuberculosis, which can spread from person to person by various means. The mycolic acids present in the cell wall of Mycobacterium prevents it from drying out in the atmosphere, and so, it can survive for a prolonged period of time in the open.
Streptococcus pneumoniae causes a variety of diseases, including pneumonia, meningitis, sinus and ear infections, and bacteremia. All these diseases can spread through close contact with an infected individual.
