Concept explainers
To determine: The lung volume that must be changed when vital capacity decreases with age but total lung capacity does not change.
Introduction: Lung volume can be divided into four volumes, one is tidal volume, second is inspiratory reserve volume, the third is expiratory reserve volume, and the fourth is residual volume. The lung volume changes with the age, sex, and weight of the individual.
To determine: The direction of change in the residual volume when vital capacity decreases but total lung capacity does not change.
Introduction: Residual volume can be defined as the volume of the air in the lungs after forceful exhalation. It is calculated by the difference in the lung volume and vital capacity of the lung.
