Chapter 17.3, Problem 1BC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The manner in which mitochondria and chloroplast originated in eukaryotic cells through evolution.

Introduction:

The cells which have defined nucleus and cell organelles are known as eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells have semiautonomous cell organelles known as mitochondria and chloroplast. They are known as semiautonomous because they are still dependent on the other parts of cells in spite of having the capability to grow and divide.

MAKE CONNECTIONS The bacterium Wolbachia is asymbiont that lives in mosquito cells and spreads rapidlythrough mosquito populations. Wolbachia can make mosquitoes resistant to infection by Plasmodium; researchersare seeking a strain that confers resistance and does notharm mosquitoes. Compare evolutionary changes thatcould occur if malaria control is attempted using such aWolbachia strain versus using insecticides to kill mosquitoes. (Review Figure 28.16 and Concept 23.4.)
Briefly describe what endosymbiotic theory is.   Describe a few ways in which endosymbiotic theory has changed the way scientists think about the ancestral distinctions among the three domains.
Give typing answer with explanation and conclusion  What two species of bacteria evolved into mitochondria and plastids? What are the basics of endosymbiotic theory?
