Chapter 18, Problem 1FC
To determine

The number of electrons must be transferred to have the same charge in both objects.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 1FC

The number of electrons to be transferred is 1.9×1013_.

Explanation of Solution

Calculation:

There are two objects carrying the different charges that are 8.0μC, 2.0μC.

Find equivalent charge of 8.0μC, 2.0μC.

Equivalentcharge=8.0μC+2.0μC2=3.0μC

Each of the electrons has a value of charge. Mathematically, one electron has 1.60×1019C of charge.

Calculate the electrons required for one Coulomb of charge.

1electron=1.60×1019C1C=11.60×1019electrons1C=6.25×1018electrons

The number of electrons to be transferred is,

(6.25×1018)(3.0×106)=1.875×10131.9×1013

Conclusion:

Thus, the number of electrons to be transferred is 1.9×1013_.
