(II) When using a mercury barometer (Section 13–6), the vapor pressure of mercury is usually assumed to be zero. At room temperature mercury’s vapor pressure is about 0.0015 mm-Hg. At sea level, the height h of mercury in a barometer is about 760mm. (a) If the vapor pressure of mercury is neglected, is the true atmospheric pressure greater or less than the value read from the barometer? (b) What is the percent error? (c) What is the percent error if you use a water barometer and ignore water’s saturated vapor pressure at STP?

- An airtight dispenser for drinking water is 25 cm × 10 cm in horizontal dimensions and 20 cm tall. It has a tap of negligible volume that opens at the level of the bottom of the dispenser. Initially, it contains Water to a level 3.0 cm from the top and air at the ambient pressure, 1.00 atm, from there to the top. When the tap is opened, water will flow out until the gauge pressure at the bottom of dispenser, and thus at the opening of the tap, is 0. What volume of water flows out? Assume the temperature is constant, the dispenser is perfectly rigid, and the water has a constant density of 1000 kg/m3.arrow_forwardCheck Understanding The density of in a Classroom ( p=1.00 and T=20C ) is 1.28 kg/m3. At what pressure is the density 0.600 kg/m3 if the temperature is kept constant?arrow_forwardConsider the pressure of a height of 10 km in a volume of air, M = 0.0289 kg/mol. If the pressure at ground level remains at 1 atm but the temperature changes from 300K to 320K, what will be the change in pressure at 10 km altitude?arrow_forward
- Can the mean effective pressure of an automobile engine in operation be less than the atmospheric pressure?arrow_forwardIn one observation, the column in a mercury barometer (as isshown in Fig. 14-5a) has a measured height h of 740.35 mm.The temperatureis 5.0 C, at which temperature the density of mercury r is1.3608 104 kg/m3.The free-fall acceleration g at the site of the barometer is 9.7835 m/s2.What is the atmospheric pressure at that site in pascalsand in torr (which is the common unit for barometer readings)?arrow_forwardWhen a personsnorkels, the lungs are connecteddirectly to the atmosphere throughthe snorkel tube and thus are at atmosphericpressure. In atmospheres, what is the differencebetween this internal air pressureand the water pressure against thebody if the length of the snorkeltube is (a) 20 cm (standard situation) and (b) 4.0 m (probablylethal situation)? In the latter, the pressure difference causesblood vessels on the walls of the lungs to rupture, releasing bloodinto the lungs., an elephant can safelysnorkel through its trunk while swimming with its lungs 4.0 m belowthe water surface because the membrane around its lungscontains connective tissue that holds and protects the blood vessels, preventing rupturing.arrow_forward
- Estimate the atmospheric pressure in atm. top of Mt Hulahulalang which is 15 km above sea level. Assume that the atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1 atm and the temperature is constant at 25 C. Express in 4 decimal values.arrow_forwardWhat happens if the ideal air balloon does not follow ideal gas laws?arrow_forwardLet’s imagine that at the beginning of a journey a truck tire has a volume of 30,000 cm3 and an internal pressure of 170 kPa. The temperature of the tire is 16∘C. By the end of the trip, the volume of the tire has increased to 32,000 cm3 and the temperature of the air inside the tire is 40∘C. What is the tire pressure at the end of the journey?arrow_forward
- A deep-sea diver should breathe a gas mixture that has the same oxygen partial pressure as at sea level, where dryair contains 20.9% oxygen and has a total pressure of 1.01×105 N/m2. (a) What is the partial pressure of oxygenat sea level? (b) If the diver breathes a gas mixture at a pressure of 2.00×106 N/m2, what percent oxygen shouldit be to have the same oxygen partial pressure as at sea level?arrow_forward(II) A physician judges the health of a heart by measuring thepressure with which it pumps blood. If the physician mistakenly attaches the pressurized cuff around a standing patient’s calf (about 1 m below the heart) instead of the arm (Fig. 10–42), what error (in Pa) would be introduced in theheart’s blood pressure measurement?arrow_forwardIf the atmospheric pressure is 0.995 atm, what is the pressureof the enclosed gas in each of the three cases depicted in thedrawing?
