Chapter 18, Problem 3CSL
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The term “blood doping” and also determine why an athlete would be banned for blood doping.
Concept introduction:
The body has a property to compensate the decreased supply of oxygen in the body by increasing the number of erythrocyte per unit volume in blood. This property is beneficial for sportsperson or an athlete as it would enhance their endurance and body’s ability to supply oxygen to the body muscle. Athletes enhance their blood’s ability by increasing their erythrocyte numbers naturally by training at higher altitudes. But some athletes by illegal and artificial mean enhance their blood’s ability which is known as blood doping.

Your patient is an 85-year-old man with congestive heart failure (CHF). BP = 145/87. He has
been very ill and hasn't been eating. A blood test shows that he has hypoproteinemia (low
levels of protein in the blood).
Would an intravenous (IV) infusion of albumin be an appropriate treatment? Why or why not?
Yes, because it would help with blood clotting.
No, because it would help with blood clotting.
Yes, because it would lead to an increase in blood volume.
No, because it would lead to an increase in blood volume.
Yes, because it would decrease his blood pressure.
No, because it would decrease his blood pressure.
Yes, because since he doesn't have enough protein in his blood, you should add more.
No, because since he doesn't have enough protein in his blood, you should add more.
Ms. Wu, whose blood type is O-, requires a blood transfusion. Her family members volunteer to donate blood. Their blood types are as follows: her son, type B-; her husband, type B+; her daughter, type O+. Which family members could safely donate blood to Ms. Wu? Who could not? Explain.
If a woman has 5 L of blood and she donates 1 pint (about 0.5 L), what approximate percentage is she donating: 1%, 5%, 10%, or 15%? Why do you think individuals below a certain weight (i.e., less than 110 pounds) are not allowed to give blood?
