Firmicutes are the major phyla that have a thick peptidoglycan cell wall. They are Gram-positive bacteria. The phylum Actinomycetes are related to Firmicutes and also stain Gram-positive. The cell walls of both the phyla are supported by teichoic acid and phosphodiester cross-linking chains of glycerol and ribitol.
