To describe: The pattern of fetal blood flow to and from the placenta.
Introduction: At birth, the pattern of blood flow through the fetal heart and the systemic circuit must change. Prior to birth, the lungs of the fetus are collapsed; however, most of the blood totally bypasses the pulmonary circuit. The internal opening (foramen ovale) allows blood to flow from the right atrium to the left atrium.
