Chapter 18.3, Problem 18.4CE
Noise cancellation headphones use a microphone to pick up background noise and a speaker to produce a sound wave canceling the noise. These headphones arc used on planes or in noisy dormitory rooms to reduce distracting sounds, allowing the wearer to study a physics textbook. Figure 18.18 is a graph of ΔP versus t for the noise produced by a human voice (perhaps a roommate). Sketch a corresponding graph of ΔP versus t that must be generated by the speaker so as to cancel the noise.

- An entrepreneur decides to invent and market a device that will fool the Doppler radar units used to detect cars that are speeding. The device would be placed at the very front of the car and would detect the radar signal, determine its frequency, and transmit back its own radar signal that would make the radar unit register a legal speed. What would the frequency of the "fake'' signal have 10 be in comparison to the original? If a second unit were designed to be placed at the back end of the car, what would be different about the frequency it would have to use compared to that used by the unit at the from?arrow_forwardAssume a 150 W loudspeaker broadcasts sound equally in all directions and produces sound with a level of 103 dB at a distance of 1.60 m from its center. (a) Find its sound power output. If a salesperson claims the speaker is rated at 150. W, he is referring to the maximum electrical power input to the speaker. (b) Find the efficiency of the speaker, that is, the fraction of input power that is converted into useful output power.arrow_forwardSpeakers in stereo systems have two colorcoded terminals to indicate how to hook up the wires. If the wires are reversed, the speaker moves in a direction opposite mat of a properly connected speaker. Explain why it is important to have both speakers connected the same way.arrow_forward
