To explain: How the cells are able to synthesize different molecules, in terms of cytoplasmic determinants and gene regulation.
Concept introduction:
During embryonic development, the zygote is differentiated to form mature cells with a specific structure and function. The process is known as cell differentiation. As the embryo enlarges and the cell number increases, the cells communicate with each other in the embryo. Certain cytoplasmic determinants and signals from other nearby embryonic cells regulate the specific gene expression. Signal molecules regulate gene expression by the activation and deactivation of specific genes of other cells in a process known as induction. These processes together determine the fate of embryonic cells.

- compare and contrast how GPCRs and RTKs transduce their signal to the cell? include the types of ligands they bind, the GTP binding protein that is activated, and how the signal is transduced and amplified. what effects does it have on the cell?arrow_forwardConsider the estrogen receptor (ER), a cell-cell signaling molecule which can be mutated to caus3 cancer. ER has a very short half life of 30 minutes. Consider a cell that starts out with 20,000 molecules of estrogen receptor at the start of your experiemnt. Ar t=0 you treat the cell. At t=0 you treat the cell with two drugs. 1)alpha-amanitin, a poisonous chemical from mushrooms that inhibits the enzymatic activity of RNA polymerase (this is why you should know your mushrooms) and 2) cycloheximide, a drug that inhibits translation by the ribosome. Under these conditions, how many molecules of ER protein will be present at the following times?arrow_forwardWhich of the following would not inhibit signal transduction? a. Phosphate groups are removed from proteins. b. Endocytosis acts on receptors and their bound signals. c. Receptors and signaling molecules separate. d. Receptors and bound signaling molecules enter lysosomes. e. Autophosphorylation targets the cytoplasmic portion of the receptor.arrow_forward
- During signal transduction (a) the cell converts an extracellular signal into an intracellular signal that leads to a change in some cell process (b) a signaling molecule directly activates or represses several genes (c) each enzyme catalyzes production of one molecule of product (d) enzymes in the signal cascade remain active until the last component of the pathway alters a cellular process (e) the signal is terminated by cyclic AMParrow_forward5. Explain the signaling steps that take place after the EGF receptor is dimerized, up to the poiunt when Ras gets activated. Draw a schematic to make it easier for your classmates to understand.6. Explain why the RTK signaling pathway includes the extra complication of having a protein (Ras) that switches between GTP- and GDP-bound states. PLEASE ANDWER BOTHarrow_forwarda universal feature of cell signaling receptors is that they? a. undergo a structural (shape) change when the signal molecule is bound b. are present only in the plasma membrane c. are only ion channels d. are protein kinases e. aer only nuclear receptorsarrow_forward
