Introduction:
The cardiovascular system of the body is responsible for transporting the oxygen and the nutrients to all the cellular compartments and cells of the body. This system comprises the blood vessels and the heart. The blood vessels comprise the arteries, veins, and the capillaries. The arteries are responsible for carrying blood away from the heart. The veins carry the blood toward to the heart.

- Identify the major veins in the following diagram.arrow_forwardFill in the blanks with the name of the appropriate vascular tunic (intima, media, or externa).__(1) forms the valves of veins__(2) the thickest tunic in veins__(3) the tunic with the largest vasa vasorum__(4) the outer tunic; is mostly connective tissue__(5) contains endothelium__(6) is mostly smooth musclearrow_forwardA pulse can be felt in the following arteries: superficial temporal, facial, common carotid, brachial, femoral, popliteal, posterior tibial, and dorsalis pedis (Figure 20.8b). Name the artery from which each artery listed branches. Here is an example to get you started: The superficial temporal artery is a branch of the external carotid artery.arrow_forward
- Select the best answer or answers from the choices given: Which statement does not accurately describe veins? (a) Have less elastic tissue and smooth muscle than arteries, (b) contain more fibrous tissue than arteries, (c) most veins in the extremities have valves, (d) always carry deoxygenated blood.arrow_forwardSelect the best answer or answers from the choices given: Freshly oxygenated blood is first received by the (a) right atrium, (b) left atrium, (c) right ventricle, (d) left ventricle.arrow_forwardUsing the letters from column B, match the artery descriptions in column A. (Note that some require more than a single choice.)arrow_forward
- Match each item in column A with the most closely related item in column B. Place letters for answers in the spaces provided.arrow_forwardSelect the best answer or answers from the choices given: Peripheral resistance (a) is inversely proportional to the length of the vascular bed, (b) increases in anemia, (c) decreases in polycythemia, (d) is inversely related to the diameter of the arterioles.arrow_forwardSelect the best answer or answers from the choices given: Tracing the blood from the heart to the right hand, we find that blood leaves the heart and passes through the aorta, the right subclavian artery, the axillary and brachial arteries, and through either the radial or ulnar artery to arrive at the hand.Which artery is missing from this sequence? (a) coronary, (b) brachiocephalic, (c) cephalic, (d) right common carotid.arrow_forward
