Chapter 19, Problem 3AAATB
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The damage caused to the body by the radioactive minerals found in the tobacco.
Introduction:
Tobacco smoking is the practice of smoking the tobacco and inhaling the smoke of the tobacco. The tobacco consists of gaseous particles that are harmful for health. Intake of tobacco by people is done by using cigars and tobacco pipes. Inhaling tobacco releases dopamine and endorphins that are associated with pleasures.

A 70 kg adult male is exposed to cadmium-containing vapors at his worksite. If he inhales 20m3 per work day and he works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks a year, for 30 years, what is the maximum allowable cadmium concentration in the air if the cancer risk is to be maintained below 10−6? How would the acceptable concentration change if the calculation were repeated for a 50 kg woman?
A laboratory trial is conducted to evaluate the risks associated with consumption of pesticide-contaminated water. 45 out of 500 mice exposed to the pesticide-contaminated water develop stomach cancer. 11 out of 500 mice that were not exposed to the pesticide contaminated water also developed cancer. What are:
a. the relative risk?
b. the attributable risk?
c. the odds ratio?
Do these epidemiological statistics suggest a potential link between consumption of this water and stomach cancer?
Please answer the following question in
at least 2 paragraphs.
Explain why you agree or disagree with
each of the following statements: a. We
should not worry much about exposure
to toxic chemicals because almost any
chemical, at a large enough dosage, can
cause some harm.
Radioactive decay produces ionising radiation. Like all ionising radiation this can lead to harmful effects on living tissue due to cell damage including damage to DNA, mutation and cell death. Contrast the differing health risks associated when working with alpha, beta or gamma radiation sources.

- A laboratory rat is exposed to an alpha-radiation source whose activity is 12.2 mCi Mrem is a value that indicates the amount of radiation damage incurred. Radiation dose should be multiplied by a factor that measures the relative damage. This multiplication factor is known as the relative biological effectiveness (RBE). The product of the radiation dose in rad and the RBE of the radiation give the effective dosage in rem (roentgen equivalent for man): number of rem = (number of rad) (RBE). The value of mrad found in Part C is multiplied by the RBE, 9.5, to determine mrem. Part F Deff= mrem If the RBE of the radiation is 9.5, calculate the effective absorbed dose in Sv.
