The egg is a large cell and contributes almost all the nutrients present in a fertilized egg. The sperm contributes little more than its set of chromosomes. Just how much bigger is a human egg than a human sperm? The human egg is about 100 micrometers in diameter. The head of a human sperm is about 4 micrometers in diameter (and, if you are curious, a human sperm is about 50 micrometers long). Show that the volume of a human egg is 15,625 times larger than the volume of a human sperm. Recall that the formula for the volume of a sphere is

- Suppose a species of bacteria divides once every 20 minutes. You start with a single bacterium on your unrefrigerated ham and cheese sandwich at 8:00 am. Show that when you sit down to lunch at noon, there will be 4096 bacteria on your sandwich.arrow_forwardThe Greenland shark is thought to be the longest-living vertebrate on earth. Early estimates of its maximum age were based on the fact that such sharks grow in length only about a centimeter per year, and yet an adult shark can reach a length of 15 feet. Estimate how long a 15 foot shark might have lived. (A newborn shark is about 1 foot long.)arrow_forwardWhat is mmometum?arrow_forward
- An ocean dwelling dinosaur has an estimated body volume of 1.38 x 10^6 cm^3 and a mass of 1.24 x 10^6 g. What is its density?arrow_forwardCompare the following lengths using density calculations. Gold has a density of about 19.3 g/cm3. You are now given a cubed piece of gold that has a mass of 19.3 g in the form of a cube is 1 cm long on each side. If we now double the mass of gold to 38, 6 g then what would be the length of the sides of a cube that has twice this mass of gold?arrow_forwardPlease answer this question correctly using the formula, don't use Ai tools.arrow_forward
- A Hippogriff is a magical beast that had tail of a horse. It is very similar to another magical creature, the Griffin, with the horse rear replacing the lion rear. A slightly different breed of Hippogriffs, living in the Rathlin Island—the northernmost point in Northern Ireland, was known to have a growth rate of 0.2 individuals per individual—year. From an initial population of N0, it grew to 35 individuals after 5 years. After 17 more years, the total population of hippogriffs in Rathlin Island rose to 1588 individuals. Solve for the carrying capacity of Rathlin Island and the initial population of the said specie.arrow_forwardThere are five microns per cell and a total of100,000 cells in a spore. Given thisinformation, estimate the weight of a spore.Explain how you got the answer. Finalanswer should be in Newtons. No handwritten.arrow_forwardSuppose that the bacteria in a colony grow unchecked according to the Law of Exponential Change. The colony starts with 1 bacterium and triples in number every 12 minutes. How many bacteria will the colony contain at the end of 24 hours?arrow_forward
- A particular city had a population of 23,000 in 1950 and a population of 30,000 in 1960. Assuming that its population continues to grow exponentially at a constant rate, what population will it have in 2000? The population of the city in 2000 will be people.arrow_forwardWhy do contemporary societies need robotic help?arrow_forwardA sample of a gold nugget was measured and ha a mass of 2.94 lbm. if the gold is drawn into a wire whose diameter is 3.73 x 10^ -3, how many inches of gold wire can be obtained from the nugget? The density of gold is 19.3 g/cm^3arrow_forward
