Consider an island with a population density of 50 people/km2 . If the annual growth is 2%, determine the year in which the population density be equal to 20,000 people/km2
A water treatment plant in a city is to be upgraded to meet the needs of the population in the year 2025, and the water distribution system is to be expanded to meet the needs of the population in the year 2045 or 2055. The 2010-population of the city was 225000, and based on a saturation population of 2,500,000, the 2070-population is estimated to be 420000. Estimate, using decreasing rate of increase method, the city's population in 2025, 2045 and 2055 to facilitate the design of these systems.

- The total world population in 2012 was about 7 billion, and Figure 2.11 shows that at that time the actual world population growth rate was about 1% per year. The figure also shows an anticipated roughly linear decrease in growth rate that extrapolates to zero growth in about the year 2080. Assuming an average growth rate of 0.5% between 2012 and 2080, what would the world population be in 2080? How does this compare with estimates discussed in the text for limits to human population?arrow_forwardA reservoir is proposed for a city’s water supply. It has been sized so that wet season flows can be saved to provide water in the dry season. The population of 100,000 and the economic activity in the city are stable – no substantial change is expected for the next 20 years. The per capita water demand was taken to be 300 liters/person/day, and it does not change by the time of year. Based on 30 years of historical river flow data and the projected monthly demand for the next 20 years, it is estimated that a storage equal to 4 months of demand is adequate. a) What is the storage capacity of the reservoir? b) The capital cost of providing the storage is $20/m3, and the annual operating and maintenance cost is 5% of the capital cost. The maximum the residents are willing to pay for the water is $2/m3. What is the projected rate of return on this investment over the 20 years project plan.arrow_forward(c) In a residential area of 250, 000 people, the specific water demand is estimated at 150 l/c/d which includes leakage.(i) Evaluate demand in 20 years if the assumed annual demand growth is 2.5 %.(ii) Applying both the linear and exponential models in estimating water demand.arrow_forward
