Concept introduction:
In an atom, protons and neutrons rest in the nucleus while electrons are located on different shells with different energy level. The outermost energy shell is said to be the valence shell. Each electron shell has a different energy level, with the shells closest to the nucleus having low energy than those farther from the nucleus.
