Answer to Problem 23P

The total displacement of chipmunk is 170cm to the left.

Explanation of Solution

The chipmunk travels a distance of x1 to his right, x2 distance to the left, x3 distance to the right, x4 distance to the left.

Let us take right side to be positive and left side to be negative. The direction and distance travelled by chipmunk is shown in figure 1 below.

Write the equation to find the total displacement of chipmunk.

d=x1x2+x3x4 (I)

Here, d is the total displacement, x1,x2,x3and x4 are the distances

Conclusion

Substitute 80cm for x1 , 30cm for x2 , 90cm for x3 , 310cm for x4 in equation (I) to get d.

d=80cm30cm+90cm310cm=170cm

Since the displacement is negative, its direction is towards the left.

Therefore, the total displacement of chipmunk is 170cm to the left.

(b)

To determine

What is the average speed of chipmunk in a time of 18s ?

(b)

Answer to Problem 23P

The average speed of chipmunk is 28cm/s.

Explanation of Solution

Write the equation to find the total distance travelled by chipmunk.

d=x1+x2+x3+x4 (I)

Here, d is the total distance, x1,x2,x3and x4 are the distances

Write the equation to find the average speed.

vav=dt (II)

Here, vav is the average speed, d is the total distance, t is the tome

Conclusion:

Substitute 80cm for x1 , 30cm for x2 , 90cm for x3 and 310cm for x4 in equation (I) to get d.

d=80cm+30cm+90cm+310cm=510cm

Substitute 510cm for d and 18s for t in equation (II) to get vav

vav=510cm18s=28cm/s

Therefore, The average speed of chipmunk is 28cm/s.

Answer to Problem 23P

The average velocity of chipmunk is 9.4cm/s to the left.

Explanation of Solution

Write the equation to find the total displacement by chipmunk.

d=x1x2+x3x4 (I)

Here, d is the total displacement, x1,x2,x3and x4 are the distances

Write the equation to find the average speed.

vav=dt (II)

Here, vav is the average speed, d is the total distance, t is the tome

Conclusion:

Substitute 80cm for x1 , 30cm for x2 , 90cm for x3 and 310cm for x4 in equation (I) to get d.

d=80cm-30cm+90cm-310cm=-170cm

Substitute 170cm for d and 18s for t in equation (II) to get vav

vav=170cm18s=9.4cm/s

Therefore, The average speed of chipmunk is 9.4cm/s.
