Concept explainers
Between 2009 and 2050, as the world population is expected to increase by 2.3 billion, urban populations are projected to grow by 2.9 billion-from 3.4 to 6.3 billion (UNDESA, 2009). Urban areas are therefore expected to absorb all of the world’s population growth over the next four decades, while also drawing in some of the rural population. Furthermore, most of the urban population growth will be concentrated in the cities and towns of less developed regions that already face enormous backlogs in shelter, infrastructure, and services, as well as insufficient drinking water supply, deteriorating sanitation, and increasing environmental pollution. What would you say are the most important factors of water resources sustainability that must be studied to handle this urban growth, particularly in the less developed regions?

Check out a sample textbook solution- The population of a particular country has a doubling time of 45 years. When will the population be three times its present value?arrow_forwardThe population of a certain community follows the law of exponential change. If the present population of the community is 144,000 and ten (10) years ago was 100,000 when will the population double? In ten (10) years what will be the population of the community?arrow_forwardThe population of a certain country has grown at a rate proportional to the number of people in the country.at present, the country has 80 million inhabitants. Ten year ago it had 70 million assuming that this trend continues. Find an expression for the approximate number of people living in the country at any time(taking t=0 to be the present time )And the approximate number of people who will inhabit the country at the end of the next ten year period?arrow_forward
- In 2007 the average growth of the global population was 1.2 percent per year. (a) Determine the doubling time expected for the global population using this information. (b) What might prevent the population from reaching this level?arrow_forwardThe population of a state is 25,600 in the year 1800 and 218,900 in the year 1900. Calculate the expected population in the year 2000 if (a) the growth is linear and (b) the growth is exponential.arrow_forward1- The recent population of a city is 30000 inhabitant. What is the predicted population after 30 years if the population increases 4000 in 5 years. 2- The recent population of a city is 30000 inhabitant. What is the predicted population after 30 years if the growth rate is 3.5%. 3- The population of a town as per the senses records are given below, estimate the population of the town as on 2040 by all methods.arrow_forward
- The population of the Cuba doubled in the last 5 years from 2000 to 2005. Assuming the rate of population increase will remain the same, in what year will the population triple ?arrow_forward5. A population of 4 million inhabitants grows at a rate of 3% annually.Calculate the population size at the end of 5 years.arrow_forwardTHE POPULATION OF THE PHILIPPINES DOUBTED IN THE LAST 30 YEARS FROM 1967 TO 1997. ASSUMING RATE OF POPULATION INCREASE WILL REMAIN THE SAME, IN WHAT YEAR WILL THE POPULATION TRIPLE?arrow_forward
- Solve the application problem. Show complete details of your solution. The population of a certain community is known to increase at a rate proportional tothe number of people presently living in the community. If after 5 years the populationhas doubled and after three years the population is 10,000. What was the initialpopulation? What will be the population in 10 years?arrow_forwardSolve the following application problems. The population of a certain community is known to increase at a rate proportional to the number of people presently living in the community. If after 5 years the population has doubled and after three vears the population is 10.000. What was the initia population? What will be the population in 10 years?arrow_forwardThe population of the Philippines has doubled in thelast 50 years. The population of the Philippines in 1948was 35 million. On what year will our population triple?arrow_forward
