Concept explainers
Between 2009 and 2050, as the world population is expected to increase by 2.3 billion, urban populations are projected to grow by 2.9 billion-from 3.4 to 6.3 billion (UNDESA, 2009). Urban areas are therefore expected to absorb all of the world’s population growth over the next four decades, while also drawing in some of the rural population. Furthermore, most of the urban population growth will be concentrated in the cities and towns of less developed regions that already face enormous backlogs in shelter, infrastructure, and services, as well as insufficient drinking water supply, deteriorating sanitation, and increasing environmental pollution. What would you say are the most important factors of water resources sustainability that must be studied to handle this urban growth, particularly in the less developed regions?

Check out a sample textbook solution- The population of a state is known to grow at a rate proportional to the number of people presently living in the state. If after one decade the population has trebled and if after two decades the population is 150,000, find the number of people initially living in the state.arrow_forwardThe population of a city in the first three continuous years is given as 6000, 8000 and 10000 respectively. What is the population of the city in the fourth continuous year, according to the geometric increase method?arrow_forwardThe recent population of a city is 30000 inhabitants. Estimate the predicted population after 30 years if the population increases 4000 in 5 years.arrow_forward
- The total world population in 2012 was about 7 billion, and Figure 2.11 shows that at that time the actual world population growth rate was about 1% per year. The figure also shows an anticipated roughly linear decrease in growth rate that extrapolates to zero growth in about the year 2080. Assuming an average growth rate of 0.5% between 2012 and 2080, what would the world population be in 2080? How does this compare with estimates discussed in the text for limits to human population?arrow_forward4. The population of a certain community follows the law of exponential change. If the present population of the community is 154 000 and 12 years ago was 120 000 when will be the population tripple? In seven years, what is the population of the community?arrow_forwardSOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS SHOWING EVERY DETAIL.arrow_forward
- The population of a community is known to increase at a rate proportional to the number of people present at a time t. If an initial population Po has doubled in 5 years, how long will it take to triple?arrow_forwardQ2. For a city of a population (10,000+x+y) capita (in 2012) and geometric increase rate =1.2%. find the population in (2040)arrow_forwardAccording to the statistics authority, the total population in the Philippines last 2015 reached a 100.51 million with the population growth rate of 1.36%. Determine the population of the Philippines in the year 2025 if the same growth rate will be used using the Malthusian Model.arrow_forward
- A city was having a population of 3,25,000 in the year 1971 and 4,75,000 in 2011. According to geometric increase method, what is the % growth rate per decade?arrow_forwardA water treatment plant in a city is to be upgraded to meet the needs of the population in the year 2025, and the water distribution system is to be expanded to meet the needs of the population in the year 2045 or 2055. The 2010-population of the city was 225000, and based on a saturation population of 2,500,000, the 2070-population is estimated to be 420000. Estimate, using decreasing rate of increase method, the city's population in 2025, 2045 and 2055 to facilitate the design of these systems.
