Case 2

As a result of the hyperinflation, the patient's work of breathing increased because her lungs were inflated to the very top of their pressure- volume curve. As the pressure-volume curve illustrates, lung compliance is very (high __________; low_______) on the upper, flat portion of the pressure-volume curve.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The blank space in the statement, “As a result of hyperinflation, the patient’s work of breathing increased because her lungs were inflated to the very top of their pressure–volume curve. As the pressure–volume curve illustrates, lung compliance is very (high _________; low ______) on the upper, flat portion of the pressure–volume curve.”

Introduction:

Hyperinflation is the result of air getting trapped in the alveoli of the lungs. Asthma and cystic fibrosis cause hyperventilation. In asthma, the obstruction in the bronchial muscle causes inflammation in airways. This results in decreased exhalation by lungs, which, in turn, traps air inside, causing hyperinflation of alveoli.

Please refer to Clinical Application Case-2 for further information.

Explanation

In the given case, the teenage girl was suffering from long-term asthma that resulted in an acute reduction in her lung compliance. During an asthma attack, there is a progressive increase in the obstruction of the patient’s airways, which impedes the ability of the patient exhale completely.

Hyperinflation is a condition where the lungs are hyperinflated, causing obstructive pulmonary diseases like asthma and cystic fibrosis. This bronchial obstruction is due to excessive secretions of mucosal edema in the smooth muscle of lungs. It causes a decrease in the patient’s ability to exhale properly and the air trapped in the alveoli cause hyperventilation...
