Concept Introduction:
VSEPR model is useful tool to determine shapes as well as properties such as polarity of molecules.
The extent of polarity is quantitatively expressed as dipole moment. It is defined as product of charges of two bonded atoms and the separation between them. The electronegativity difference decides the direction of dipole moment. It is indicated by an arrow head from positive end towards negative end.
For complex molecules, the shape must be determined prior to determination of individual dipoles. Thus shape is governed by the VSEPR model.

- Keeping in mind that some elements violate the octet rule, draw a Lewis structure for each compound: (a) BeH 2; (b) PCl 5.arrow_forwardConsider the following molecular shapes:a) Match each shape with one of the following species: XeF₃,SbBr₃, GaCl₃. (b) Which, if any, is polar? (c) Which has the most valence electrons around the cental atom?arrow_forwardThere are two main types of covalent bond breakage. In ho-molytic breakage , each atom in the bond gets one of the shared electrons. In some cases, the electronega-tivity of adjacent atoms affects the bond energy. In heterolytic breakage, one atom gets both electrons and the other gets none;thus, a cation and an anion form. (a) Why is the C−C bond in H₃C−CF₃(423 kJ/mol) strongerthan that in H₃C−CH₃(376 kJ/mol)?(b) Use bond energy and any other data to calculate the heat ofreaction for the heterolytic cleavage of O₂.arrow_forward
- From their Lewis structures, determine the number of sand π bonds in each of the following molecules or ions:(a) CO2; (b) cyanogen,(CN2); (c) formaldehyde, H2CO;(d) formic acid, HCOOH, which has one H and two O atomsattached to C.arrow_forwardChemical species are said to be isoelectronic if they have the same Lewis structure (regardless of charge). Consider these ions and write a Lewis structure for a neutral molecule that is isoelectronic with them. (a) CN–, (b) NH4+ (c) CO3 2–arrow_forwardDraw a Lewis structure for (a) PH₄⁺; (b) C₂F₄; (c) SbH₃.arrow_forward
- Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) is used in the electronics industry to clean surfaces. NF3 is also a potent greenhouse gas. (A) Draw the Lewis structure of NF3 and determine its molecular geometry. (B) BF3 and NF3 both have three covalently bonded fluorine atoms around a central atom. Do they have the same dipole moment? (C) Could BF3 also behave as a greenhouse gas? Explain why or why not.arrow_forwardConsider the molecules SCl₂, F₂, CS₂, CF₄, and BrCl.(a) Which has bonds that are the most polar?(b) Which have a molecular dipole moment?arrow_forward19. :O: || :0-N- O: Which of the following statements, if true, would support the claim that the NO3 ion, represented above, has three resonance structures? (A) The NO3 ion is not a polar species. (B) The oxygen-to-nitrogen-to-oxygen bond angles are 90°. (C) One of the bonds in NO3 is longer than the other two. (D) One of the bonds in NO3¯ is shorter than the other two.arrow_forward
- (a) How does a polar molecule differ from a nonpolar one? (b) Atoms X and Y have different electronegativities. Will the diatomic molecule X—Y necessarily be polar? Explain. (c) What factors affect the size of the dipole moment of a diatomic molecule?arrow_forwardLike several other bonds, carbon-oxygen bonds havelengths and strengths that depend on the bond order. Draw Lewis structures for the following species, and arrange them in order of increasing carbon-oxygen bond length and then by increasing carbon-oxygen bond strength: (a) CO; (b) CO₃²⁻; (c) H₂CO;(d) CH₄O; (e) HCO₃(H attached to O).arrow_forwardAn important starting material for the manufacture ofpolyphosphazenes is the cyclic molecule (NPCl₂)₃. The mol-ecule has a symmetrical six-membered ring of alternating N and P atoms, with the Cl atoms bonded to the P atoms. The nitrogen-phosphorus bond length is significantly less than that expectedfor an N−P single bond.(a) Draw a likely Lewis structure for the molecule.(b) How many lone pairs of electrons do the ring atoms have?(c) What is the order of the nitrogen-phosphorus bond?arrow_forward
