Concept explainers
To determine:
The use of burrows during fires.
Introduction:
A single tortoise can build up to 35 burrows. Burrows are made by the tortoises and they bury themselves there to regulate temperature of their body. These borrows can be around 30 feet long as well.
Explanation of Solution
The gopher tortoise contains burrows that are around 30 feet, acts as a home to many rare species as well as various other organisms found in that habitat. During fires, burrows act as temporary shelter for various organisms. In these burrows, fire cannot reach and high temperature of outside environment does not bother the organisms there.
