Here's an interesting challenge you can give to a friend. Hold a $1 (or larger!) bill by an upper corner. Have a friend prepare to pinch a lower corner, putting her fingers near but not touching the bill. Tell her to try to catch the bill when you drop it by simply closing her fingers. This seems like it should be easy, but it's not After she sees that you have released the bill, it will take her about 0.25 s to react and close her fingers—which is not fast enough to catch the bill. How much time does it take for the bill to fall beyond her grasp? The length of a bill is 16 cm.

- Problem 2. New in the city, Armin tried to walk around and see the site. He started on his new apartment, and walked 4.5 km, 30° East of North and then 2.0 kmn, West. Realizing that he was hungry, he remembered that 2.0 km, South of his apartment, there was a McDonalds nearby. How far and in what direction should he walk so he can go to McDonalds and get food to eat? a. Draw a graphical representation of the problem b. Show the table with the x and y components of each vector. c. Show the components of the resultant vector. d. Solve for the magnitude of the resultant vector e. Solve for the angle and specify the direction of the resultant vector.arrow_forwardDraw each of the following vectors, then find its x- and y-components.a. d→ = (2.0 km, 30° left of +y-axis)b. ν→ = (5.0 cm/s, -x-direction)c. a→ = (10 m/s2, 40° left of -y-axis)arrow_forwardAn object is released from rest at a height of h. During the final second of its fall, it traverses a distance of 38m. Determine h. I would like to know the solution but also maybe an explanation on how I would know what process to take. For the last second, I was able to find that final vf = 38m/s. That is vf = deltax/deltat, or 38m/1s. I plugged it in to vf2 = vo2 + 2a(deltax), since I think that vf shouldn't change for h, but I got the wrong answer. Please explain.arrow_forward
- In 1780, in what is now referred to as “Brady’s Leap,” Captain Sam Brady of the U.S. Continental Army escaped certain death from his enemies by running horizontally off the edge of the cliff above Ohio’s Cuyahoga River, which is confined at that spot to a gorge. He landed safely on the far side of the river. It was reported that he leapt 22 ft across while falling 20 ft. Tall tale, or possible?a. What is the minimum speed with which he’d need to run off the edge of the cliff to make it safely to the far side of the river?b. The world-record time for the 100 m dash is approximately 10 s. Given this, is it reasonable to expect Brady to be able to run fast enough to achieve Brady’s leap?arrow_forwardThis is a two part problem. If you drive your car for 30 miles to the west, then 20 miles north of east at 60 degrees and then 5 miles south: A. What is the displacement of your car from the origin in unit vector notation? - 1.a.What are the magnitude and direction of a vector that has an x component of −25.0 units and a y component of −54.0 units? 1.b.In Example 2.12, two circus performers rehearse a trick in which a ball and a dart collide. Horatio stands on a platform 7.8 m above the ground and drops a ball straight down. At the same moment, Amelia uses a spring-loaded device on the ground to launch a dart straight up toward the ball. The dart is launched at 16.0 m/s. Find the time and height of the collision by simultaneously solving the equations for the ball and the dart.
