Introduction:

Howard uses both the social cognitive and symbolic interactionist paradigm to study social identities. She chose these approaches to illustrate her point that identity is a complex, social, and malleable concept. I agree that these paradigms are useful because they both take into account multiple factors and try to capture the nuances of human social interaction.
