Tumors associated with breast cancer usually arise from either epithelial cells or fibroblasts. Because optimal treatment differs depending on the cellular origin of the tumor, it’s important for doctors to determine which cell type is present in a tumor. Unfortunately, the distinctive morphology of epithelial cells is lost when they become cancerous, so this determination cannot be made based on cell shape alone. How might determination of the class(es) of intermediate filaments present in tumor cells aid a doctor in figuring out which cell type is involved in the tumor?
Which cell has a ruffled border and acts to break down bone matrix? From your knowledge of organelles, state which organelle would be the likely source of the enzymes that can digest bone matrix.
Figures 4 and 5 are images of osteoblasts obtained with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) which allows much higher magnification than light microscopy. TEM allows us to see organelles other than the nucleus. In the cytoplasm of these osteoblasts, there appear to be two different types of organelles based on shape differences.
Point out 2 different types/shapes of organelles on the figures 4 and 5. Based on their shapes and on the specific function of this type of cell, identify the organelles of figures 4 and 5.
