Summary Introduction

To determine:

The way through which NASA scientists determine whether the amino acids recovered from space are evidence of Earth-like extraterrestrial life rather than the result of non-metabolic processes.

Introduction:

Monomer units of amino acid cause the formation of proteins that are organic compounds containing residues. Amino acids contain a central carbon atom, a hydrogen atom, an amino group (NH2) , a carboxyl group (-COOH), and an R-group. Protein in cell functions in many ways, such as they work as enzymes, regulate metabolic reactions in the body, transport cell solutes and regulatory functions in the body.

A starved subject is fed with radio labeled protein (with NT5 and C14). Breath, blood, urine and liver samples are analyzed for chemical composition. List the names of the different compounds that will be labeled with radioactive carbon or nitrogen in the four different samples (state which compounds will be labeled with N15 and which will be labeled with C'14). Sample 1: Liver Sample 2: Breath Sample 3: Blood Sample 4: Urine
Lactose in milk is hydrolyzed, absorbed through the intestines, and then utilized for energy metabolism. Oligosaccharides that are not hydrolyzed in the digestive tract cannot be absorbed nor used for energy. Choose the best explanation for why these oligosaccharides would be necessary in human milk (or infant formula). A) These oligosaccharides prevent weight gain in infants. B) These oligosaccharides absorb excess energy, allowing infants to sleep. C) These oligosaccharides train the digestive tract to tolerate high levels of sugars, necessary for a typical adult American diet. D) These oligosaccharides provide fiber and prevent constipation.
Fragments of the Murchison meteorite that crashed in 1969 have been analyzed by multiple laboratories. The Murchison meteorite broke apart and crashed on Earth 3.5 billion years ago, causing mass destruction. The 1969 data can be broken down into the following statements. More than 86 amino acids and 14,000 molecular compounds have been detected. The amino acids detected are a mixture of right-handed and left-handed molecules and include some known amino acids and several extraterrestrial amino acids. The concentration ratios of known amino acids are similar to the ratios found on Earth. The Murchison meteorite belongs to the class of meteorites that contain chemical signatures of the solar system around the time of the Sun’s formation.   Researchers in a lab recreated conditions similar to the Murchison meteorite strike in an environment comparable to Earth 3.5 billion years ago. Which of the following statements predicts the most likely results from their simulation…
