Chapter 2, Problem 64EAP
Bob is driving the getaway car after the big bank robbery. He’s going 50 m/s when his headlights suddenly reveal a nail strip that the cops have placed across the road 150 m in front of him. If Bob can stop in Lime, he can throw the car into reverse and escape. But if he crosses the nail strip, all his tires will go flat and he will be caught. Bob’s reaction time before he can hit the brakes is 0.60s, and his car’s maximum deceleration is 10 m/s2. Does Bob stop before or after the nail strip? By what distance?

A regulation volleyball court measures L = 18.0 meters in length and d = 2.43 meters in height. A volleyball player hits the ball from a height of h = 1.50 m just over the backline, and the initial velocity of the ball creates an angle of q = 30° with the ground. At what initial speed must the ball be struck such that it barely clears the net?
At the beginning of a basketball game, a referee tosses the ball straight up with a speed of 4.6 m/s. A player cannot touch the ball until after it reaches its maximum height and begins to fall down. What is the minimum time that a player must wait before touching the ball? (Cutnell 2.42) 0.47 s
A game requires that two children each throw a ball upward as high as possible from
point O and then run horizontally in opposite directions away from O. The child who travels the
greater distance before their thrown ball impacts the ground wins. If child A throws a ball
upward with a speed of v1 = 59 ft/sec and immediately runs leftward at a constant speed
of vA = 14 ft/sec while child B throws the ball upward with a speed of v2 = 56 ft/sec and
immediately runs rightward with a constant speed of vB = 16 ft/sec, which child will win the
game? Calculate the distances sA and sB that each child travels while the respective ball is in the
air.

The first stage then detached and second stage fires, providing a constant acceleration of a2= 46 m/s^2 for the time interval t2= 109s. (A) Enter an expression for the rocket's speed, v1, at time t1 in terms of the variable provided. (B) Enter an expression for the rocket's speed, v2, at the end of the second period of acceleration, in terms of the variable provided in the problem statement. (C) Using your expression for speeds v1 and v2, calculate the total distance traveled, in meters by the rocket from launch until the end of the second piece of acceleration.arrow_forwardTwo trains A and B of length 400 m each are moving on two parallel tracks with a uniform speed of 72 Km/h in the same direction, with A ahead of B.
