& BIO EST Avoiding injury from hockey puck Hockey players wear protective helmets with facemasks. Why? Because the bone in the upper part of the cheek (the zygomatic bone) can fracture if the acceleration of a hockey puck due to its interaction with the bone exceeds 900g for a time lasting 6.0 ms or longer. Suppose a player was not wearing a facemask. Is it likely that the acceleration of a hockey puck when hitting the bone would exceed these numbers? Use some reasonable numbers of your choice and estimate the puck**#x2019;s acceleration if hitting an unprotected zygomatic bone.

An Introduction to Thermal Physics
- Consider a grey squirrel falling out of a tree to the ground. (a) If we ignore air resistance in this case (only for the sake of this problem), determine a squirrel's velocity just before hitting the ground, assuming it fell from a height of 3.0 m. (b) If the squirrel stops in a distance of 2.0 cm through bending its limbs, compare its deceleration with that of the airman in the previous problem.arrow_forwardWhen the pilot reverses the propeller in a boat moving north, the boat moves with an acceleration directed south. Assume the acceleration of the boat remains constant in magnitude and direction. What happens to the boat? (a) It eventually stops and remains stopped, (b) It eventually stops and then speeds up in the forward direction, (c) It eventually stops and then speeds up in the reverse direction, (d) It never stopsarrow_forwardA motorist drives along a straight road at a constant speed of 15.0 m/s. Just as she passes a parked motorcycle police officer, the officer starts to accelerate at 2.00 m/s2 to overtake her. Assuming that the officer maintains this acceleration, (a) determine the time interval required for the police officer to reach the motorist. Find (b) the speed and (c) the total displacement of the officer as he overtakes the motorist.arrow_forward
- A tennis player tosses a tennis ball straight up and then catches it after 2.00 s at the same height as the point of release. (a) What is the acceleration of the ball while it is in flight? (b) What, is the velocity of the ball when it reaches its maximum height? Find (c) the initial velocity of the ball and (d) the maximum height it reaches.arrow_forwardTrue or False? (a) A car must always have an acceleration in the same direction as its velocity. (b) Its possible for a slowing car to have a positive acceleration. (c) An object with constant nonzero acceleration can never stop and remain at rest.arrow_forwardDragsters can actually reach a top speed of 145 m/s in only 4.45 s—considerably less time than given in Example 2.10 and Example 2.11. (a) Calculate the average acceleration for such a dragster. (b) Find the final velocity of this dragster starting from rest and accelerating at the rate found in (a) for 402 m (a quarter mile) without using any information on time. (c) Why is the final velocity greater than that used to find the average acceleration? Hint: Consider whether the assumption of constant acceleration is valid for a dragster. If not, discuss whether the acceleration would be greater at the beginning or end of the run and what effect that would have on the final velocity.arrow_forward
- (a) By taking the slope of the curve in Figure 2.60, verify that the velocity of the jet car is 115 m/sat t=20 S. (b) By taking the slope of the curve at any point in Figure 2.61, verify that the jet car's acceleration is 5.0 m/s2.arrow_forwardA speedboat travels in a straight line and increases in speed uniformly from i = 20.0 m/s to f = 30.0 m/s in displacement x of 200 m. We wish to find the time interval required for the boat to move through this displacement, (a) Draw a coordinate system for this situation, (b) What analysis model is most appropriate for describing this situation? (c) From the analysis model, what equation is most appropriate for finding the acceleration of the speedboat? (d) Solve the equation selected in part (c) symbolically for the boats acceleration in terms of i, f, and x. (e) Substitute numerical values lo obtain the acceleration numerically. (f) Find the time interval mentioned above.arrow_forwardAn insect called the froghopper (Philaenus spumarius) has been called the best juniper in the animal kingdom. This insect can accelerate at over 4.0 103 m/s2 during a displacement of 2.0 mm as it straightens its specially equipped jumping legs. (a) Assuming uniform acceleration, what is the insect's speed after it has accelerated through this short distance? (b) How long does it take to reach that speed? (c.) How high could the insect jump if air resistance could be ignored? Note that, the actual height obtained is about 0.70 m, so air resistance is important here.arrow_forward
- The thickest and strongest chamber in the human heart is the left ventricle, responsible during systole for pumping oxygenated blood through the aorta to rest of the body. Assume aortic blood starts from rest and accelerates at 22.5 m/s2 to a peak speed of 1.05 m/s. (a) How far does the blood travel during this acceleration? (b) How much time is required for the blood to reach its peak speed?arrow_forwardAn insect called the froghopper (Philaenus spumarius) has been called the best juniper in the animal kingdom. (a) Determine the average acceleration of the car. (b) Assume that the car moves with constant acceleration. Find the distance the car travels in the first 8.00 s. (c) What is the speed of the car 10.0 s after it begins its motion if it can continue to move with the same acceleration?arrow_forward
