Concept explainers
The Starship Enterprise returns from warp drive to ordinary space with a forward speed of 50 km/s. To the crew’s great surprise, a Klingon ship is 100 km directly ahead, traveling in the same direction at a mere 20 km/s. Without evasive action, the Enterprise will overtake and collide with the Klingons in just slightly over 3.0 s. The Enterprise’s computers react instantly to brake the ship. What magnitude acceleration does the Enterprise need to just barely avoid a collision with the Klingon ship? Assume the acceleration is constant.
Hint: Draw a position-versus-time graph showing the motions of both the Enterprise and the Klingon ship. Let x0= 0 km be the location of the Enterprise as it returns from warp drive. How do you show graphically the situation in which the collision is “barely avoided”? Once you decide what it looks like graphically, express that situation mathematically.

- On a spacecraft two engines fire for a time of 532 s. One gives the craft an acceleration in the x direction of ax = 4.92 m/s2, while the other produces an acceleration in the y direction of ay = 7.16 m/s2. At the end of the firing period, the craft has velocity components of vx = 3743 m/s and vy = 4808 m/s. Calculate the magnitude of the initial velocity.arrow_forwardAn unidentified flying object (UFO) is observed to travel a total distance of 19000 m, starting and ending at rest, over a duration of 4.23 s. Assuming the UFO accelerated at a constant rate to the midpoint of its journey and then decelerated at a constant rate the rest of the way, what was the magnitude of its acceleration? Express your answer in g s , where 1 g = 9.81 m/s^2.arrow_forwardThe sport with the fastest moving ball is jai alai, where measured speeds have reached 303 km/h. If a professional jai alai player faces a ball at that speed and involuntarily blinks, he blacks out the scene for 100 ms. How far does the ball move during the blackout?arrow_forward
- In a classic clip on Americas Funniest Home Videos, a sleeping cat rolls gently off the top of a warm TV set. Ignoring air resistance, calculate the position and velocity of the cat after (a) 0.100 s, (b) 0.200 s, and (c) 0.300 s.arrow_forwardAn unidentified flying object (UFO) is observed to travel a total distance of 29000 m, starting and ending at rest, over a duration of 4.77 s. Assuming the UFO accelerated at a constant rate to the midpoint of its journey and then decelerated at a constant rate the rest of the way, what was the magnitude of its acceleration? Express your answer in g s , where 1 g = 9.81 m/s^2. 520 g s 260 g s 5,098 g s 2,549 g sarrow_forwardA rescue helicopter is hovering over a person whose sailboat has capsized. One of the rescuers tosses a life preserver straight down to the person with an initial speed of 1.25 m/s and observes that it takes 1.75 s to reach the water. How high above the water was the preserver released? Note that the downdraft of the helicopter reduces the effect of air resistance on the falling life preserver, so that an acceleration equal to that due to gravity is reasonable.arrow_forward
- how much time would it take you to cover the61-m length of the walkway if, once you get on the walkway, youimmediately turn around and start walking in the opposite direction with a speed of 1.3 m>s relative to the walkway?arrow_forwardA spacecraft is traveling with a velocity of v0x = 5460 m/s along the +x direction. Two engines are turned on for a time of 854 s. One engine gives the spacecraft an acceleration in the +x direction of ax = 1.20 m/s2, while the other gives it an acceleration in the +y direction of ay = 8.60 m/s2. It does so by accelerating at a constant rate of 9.82 m/s^2 up to the midpoint of the journey, and then decelerates at the same constant rate of 9.82 m/s^2 for the second half of the journey, ending at rest. How long did the entire journey take?arrow_forward
