To discuss: The given statement “lf plant cells contained intermediate filaments to provide the cells with tensile strength; their cell walls would be dispensable”.
Introduction: Plant cytoskeleton is made up of an organized structure called as cell wall, whereas animal cells are made up of intermediate filaments. These structures present in both plants and animals provide them a rigid structure and the strength to bear up the environmental stress. Rigidity of the plant cell wall is more when compared to the intermediate filaments present in the animals, as the plants require cells with more tensile strength to neutralize the mechanical forces (from both internal and external environment of the cell). Because of the presence of highly rigid cell wall, plants do not have to maintain the osmotic balance of the cell frequently as the animal cells do.
