Connecting the Concepts
1. There are several key concepts introduced in this chapter: Structure correlates with function: an animal’s body has a hierarchy of organization with emergent properties at each level: and complex bodies have structural adaptations that increase surface area for exchange. Label the tissue layers shown in this section of the small intestine, and describe how this diagram illustrates these three concepts.
To label: The tissue layers as shown in the section of small intestine. Also to describe the concept that ‘the structure correlates with functions’; ‘an animal’s body has a hierarchy of organization with emergent properties at each level’; and ‘complex bodies have structural adaptations that increase surface area for exchange’ in the diagram.
Introduction: The structure of each specialized cell type fits to their functions. A tissue derives its function by the cells that make it up. For example, the columnar epethelial cells.
Connective tissues have fibres and cells that provide support and connection to the tissue. Therefore, the connection of cell to tissue to the organ is visible in the given diagram.
There are many projections that line the surface of the small intestine for the absorption of the nutrients. The villi increases the surface area of the small intetine for absorption of nutrients.
Answer to Problem 1CC
Pictorial representation: A labeled diagram showing different tissue layers in a section of small intestine is presented in the Fig.1.
Fig.1: Different section of small intestine.
Explanation of Solution
(a)
Correct answer: Epithelial tissue.
Explanation: In the small intestine, epithelial tissue covers the outside of the villi. Hence the correct answer is epithelial tissue.
(b)
Correct answer: Connective tissue.
Explanation: Connective tissue attaches and provides support to the organs. Hence the correct answer is connective tissue
(c)
Correct answer: Smooth muscle tissue.
Explanation: Small intestine requires strength to push the digested product down its length, and this is provided by smooth muscle tissue. Hence the correct answer is smooth muscle tissue.
(d)
Correct answer: Connective tissue.
Explanation: Connective tissue attaches and provides support to the organs. Hence the correct answer is connective tissue.
(e)
Correct answer: Epithelial tissue.
Explanation: It attaches to the smooth muscle tissue and provide strength to the small intestine. Hence the correct answer is epithelial tissue.

- Which of the basic life processes—metabolism, responsiveness, movement, growth, differentiation, and reproduction, is referred to by the following descriptions? 1. For animals with three germ layers, the mesoderm forms skeletal muscle, bone, connective tissue, the heart, and the urogenital system. 2. Putting strain on the muscles through working out results in an increase in muscle fibers.Having more muscle fibers will lead to greater strength and muscle size.arrow_forwardtogether, forming a structure leg is an organ that is made up of muscle tissue, bone erve tissue, fat tissue, and skin tissue. Other examples of a frog's organs are its eyes, heart, lungs, and stomach. Several organs working together are called an organ system. The digestive system of a frog is an organ system that provides the frog with a way of getting energy from food sources. The digestive system includes the mouth, stomach, small and large intestines, and other organs. Other systems common to most ani- mals are the respiratory system (used for breathing), the circulatory system (used for moving blood), the nervous system (used for transmitting messages to and from the brain), the reproductive system (used for reproduction), and the ex- cretory system (used for the elimination of waste). Vertebrates (animals with backbones) also have a skeletal system that serves as a support structure. - . Can you suggest why , during the evolutionary history of animals , there has been temdency for maximum body size to increase ? Do you think it inevitable that complexity should increase along with body size ?arrow_forwardRegents Practice: Base your answer to question 1 on the information below. Ten years ago, scientists discovered a well-preserved set of dinosaur remains in China. This dinosaur, which walked on Earth about 125 million years ago, had feathers and was about the same size as a turkey - but don't be fooled. This dino's bite was a lot worse than a turkey's gobble. After a close (and careful!) examination of the dino's teeth, scientists recently concluded that this dinosaur was probably poisonous. The study was led by David Burnham, who works and teaches at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Source: www.sciencenewsforkids.org 1.
