Concept explainers
To explain: The reasons why block of agar is inoculated rather than streaking the fungal culture on a plate.
Introduction: The culture medium or growth medium is a liquid, solid, or semisolid designed to support the growth of cells or microorganisms. The agar-agar or agar is widely used as a culture medium of bacteria for growing microorganisms or other cells for laboratory experiment purposes.
Explanation of Solution
Agar is a gelatinous material or jelly-like substance obtained from the seaweed species of the genus Gelidium. Agar is the mixture of two components, namely agaropectin (a heterogeneous mixture of smaller molecules) and agarose (linear polysaccharide). The block of agar is inoculated rather than streaking because the arrangement of fungal spores will not be disrupted and it will remain intact when stained.
