Chapter 20, Problem 23P

a. An air-core coil is connected to a 200 V, 60 Hz source. The current is found to be 4 A, and a wattmeter reading of 80 W is observed. Find the effective resistance and the inductance of the coil.

b. A brass core is inserted in the coil. The ammeter reads 3 A, and the wattmeter reads 90 W Calculate the effective resistance of the core Explain the increase over the value in part (a).

c. If a solid iron core is inserted in the coil, the current is found to be 2 A, and the wattmeter reads 60 W. Calculate the resistance and inductance of the coil. Compare these values to the values in part (a), and account for the changes.

A 15 kVa closet transformer located inside a building is used to step down the voltage for the building. It is connected to a primary 9800 V AC power source. The ratio of the number of primary windings to the number of secondary windings on the transformer is 60 to 15.  a. What is the voltage and amount of current provided to the building? c. If the building consumes 3200W of power, what is its power factor? d. What is the phase angle of the secondary power source in the building?
A coil of wire having negligible resistance and inductance of 0.248 henries isconnected to a 117 – volt 50 – cycle source. Calculate (a) the inductive reactance,(b) the current, (c) the maximum power delivered to the inductor or returned to thesource, (d) the average power. Write equations for (e) the current and (f) the power. draw the circuit diagram
10. A 230/400 V three-phase motor is connected to a 230 V line voltage.  It absorbs a current intensity of 18 A, with a power factor of 0.78 We know that the resistance of one phase of the stator is 1.5 Ω.  The copper losses in the rotor are equal to those in the stator, and the iron plus mechanical losses are half those of the copper in the stator.  Determine:  a) The motor connection.  Line and phase currents and voltages.  b) The value of the different losses.  c) Engine performance.
