Introduction:
Andrew Hutchinson ( 27-year-old man) injured his right hand by the garage door. He has undergone surgery to repair it. Theproportion of lymphocytes and total leukocyte count found very low on a routine complete blood count checkup. He had felt pain in his right ring finger post-surgically. On examination of his right hand, redness, warmth, and edematous were observed. Red streaks, radiating proximally on his right forearm, was very clear. Prescription of a very high dose of antibiotics is done and to the affected arm, a sling is applied. Doctors advised reverse isolation for his protection in which nurses have been asked to wear gowns and gloves while attending. After the surgery, his right armpit became tender and enlarged due to the increment of the lymph nodes.

- A patient has been experiencing severe, persistent allergy symptoms that are reduced when she takes an antihistamine. Before the treatment, this patient was likely to have had increased activity of which leukocyte? basophils neutrophils monocytes natural killer cellsarrow_forwardMr. Alvis, age 57, presented to his physician with marked fatigue, nausea with occasional diarrhea, and a sore, swollen tongue. Lately he also has been experiencing a tingling feeling in his toes and a feeling of clumsiness. Microscopic examination of a blood sample indicated a reduced number of erythrocytes, many of which are megaloblasts, and a reduced number of leukocytes, including many large, hypersegmented cells. Hemoglobin and serum levels of vitamin B12 were below normal. Additional tests confirm pernicious anemia. Question 1 Relate the pathophysiology of pernicious anemia to the manifestations listed above.arrow_forwardMr. X, age 57, presented to his physician with marked fatigue, nausea with occasional diarrhea, and a sore, swollen tongue. Lately, he also has been experiencing a tingling feeling in his toes and a feeling of clumsiness. Discussion Questions 1. Relate the pathophysiology of pernicious anemia to the manifestations listed above.arrow_forward
- List the nine chains of lymph node, location of each and the drainage, in the appropriate sequence for palpating them.arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements concerning lymph fluid formation is true 1. Intermediate fiamnents attach lymphatic endothelial cells to sorrounding tissue 2. When the tissue swell due to the injury, gaps in the lymphatic capillaries open allowing fluid to flow from the blood capillary to the lymphatic capillary 3. Lymphatic capillaries are closed ended vesselsarrow_forwardName the polymorphonuclear leukocytesarrow_forward
- Emily Wong, 17, is brought to the ER with a fever, headache, and stiff neck. You suspect bacterial meningitis. Would you expect to see an elevated neutrophil count in a differential WBC?arrow_forwardNigel is told he has type B blood. Which ABO antibodies does he have in his plasma? Which agglutinogens are on his RBCs? Could he donate blood to an AB recipient? Could he receive blood from an AB donor? Explain.arrow_forwardMatch the names of the blood cells in column B with their descriptions in column A. Some names are used more than once. Column A Column B(1) destroys parasites (a) erythrocyte(2) has two types of granules (b) neutrophil(3) does not use diapedesis (c) eosinophil(4) stops the allergic response (d) basophil (e) lymphocyte (f) monocyte (5) the only cell that is not spherical (6) granulocyte that phagocytizes bacteria (7) the largest blood cell (8) granulocyte with the smallest granules…arrow_forward
- Name five types of leukocytes, and list the major functionsof each type.arrow_forward12.16.17.21.22 TRUE OR FALSE Systemic vein has the highest distribution percentage in blood flow followed by the large veins then the systemic arteries. Lymphatic vessels are often referred to as “resistance vessels” because of it being a factor for resisting lymph flow. The protein involucrin binds to the outer cell membrane. Keratinocytes of the strata basale and spinosum are connected by plaque. 22. Eumelanin, which is brown to black, and pheomelanin, which is yellow toarrow_forwardWhich property do granular and agranular leukocytes have in common?a. Both lack a nucleus.b. Both contain granules or vesicles.c. Both are found in approximately equal numbers in the circulating blood.d. Both are derived from myeloblasts.arrow_forward
