Chapter 20, Problem 3MC
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Pathogenic bacteria contain various virulent factors. All such bacteria contain “Lipid A” in their cell wall, however, there are some factors which are unique to some specific bacteria. Such factors range between the presence of a capsule, which prevents phagocytosis of the cell and provides antibody resistance. It is polysaccharide in nature. Presence of plasmid, it stores the genes for adhesion, fimbriae, and exotoxins. Presence of fimbriae, it ensures mobility and transfer of genetic material to bacteria.

Why are Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections difficult to treat?
A. Because they form biofilms, which are difficult for antibiotics to penetrate.
B. Because they have a special endotoxin that degrades many antibiotics.
C. Because we do not have any antibiotics that target P. aeruginosa.
D. Because they are gram-positive bacteria, which are harder to treat.
Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus most likely showed greater resistance to UV light than Serratia marcescens. This is due to:
a. Bacillus spp. are Gram-positive, while Serratia marcescens is Gram-negative
b. the Bacillus spp. are spore fonners
c. the pigment of Serratia marcescens absorbs more radiation than other cells
d. Bacillus spp. have enzymes that protect them from ozone
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is very difficult to stain because of the
A) presence of ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
B) location of the DNA within the cell.
C) large amounts of a waxlike lipids present in its cell wall.
D) lack of a cell wall.
