Chapter 21, Problem 1P
Summary Introduction

To examine: Whether the statement “In the early cleavage stages, when the embryo cannot yet feed, the developmental program is driven and controlled by the material deposited in the egg by the mother” is true or false.

Concept introduction: Cleavage is the division of cells in the embryo where the gap phases of the cell cycle are skipped and cell division occurs rapidly.

Answer to Problem 1P

Correct answer: The statement is true.

Explanation of Solution

In order to speed up the initial cleavage divisions of the zygote, the maternal genes which comprises of mRNA and proteins required for initial stages of development are pre-stored in the oocyte during the process of oogenesis. This pre-stored maternal genes and proteins helps to skip the gap phases of cell cycles. After blastula stage, the zygotic genes are activated that is, the zygote does the entire process of central dogma, post which the maternal genes are destroyed.

Conclusion
The mother deposits maternal genes in the egg for the embryo post fertilization for early cleavage stages. Hence, the statement is true.
