In 1993, the U.S. government instituted a requirement that all room air conditioners sold in the United States must have an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 10 or higher. The EER is defined as the ratio of the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, measured in British thermal units per hour, or Btu/h, to its electrical power requirement in watts. (a) Convert the EER of 10.0 to dimensionless form, using the conversion 1 Btu = 1 055 J. (b) What is the appropriate name for this dimensionless quantity? (c) In the 1970s, it was common to find room air conditioners with EERs of 5 or lower. State how the operating costs compare for 10 000-Btu/h air conditioners with EERs of 5.00 and 10.0. Assume each air conditioner operates for 1 500 h during the summer in a city where electricity costs 17.0¢ per kWh.

- The average life expectancy in Japan is 81 years. What is this time in SI units?arrow_forwardHow much efficiency would a solar panel of surface area A = 2 m² need to have to generate 1.7 kWh of electricity in a region where the solar power density is 4.5 kWh/m2/day? Write the efficiency in decimal value rounded off to 2 decimal places, not as a percentage. For instance you would write 0.25 and not 25%.arrow_forwardWhen the temperature of a metal cylinder is raised from 0.0°C to 87.0°C, its length increases by 0.20%. The energy unit used by electrical utilities in their monthly bills is the kilowatt-hour (kwh, that is, 1 kilowatts used for 1 hour) how many joules are there in a kilowatt hour? If electricity cost per $0.09 per kilowatt hour, how much does it cost per megajoule?arrow_forwardNew more economical water showers would add approximately 8l/min. If the user takes a shower once a day for 5 minutes, what would be the total amount of water consumed per year?arrow_forward
- A pyramid has a square base of side x and height h. The volume V of the pyramid is given by the expression: V - x²h 3 If V is measured to 5% and h is measured to 3%, what is the percentage uncertainty of ?
