Chapter 21, Problem 5CAL
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The interstitial fluid called lymph which is found outside the cell contains some water dissolved ions, proteins, foreign materials like pathogens and cell debris. During the capillary exchange, some of the components of lymph and excess fluid are absorbed by the lymphatic capillaries. Any defect in the drainage of lymph could cause accumulation of interstitial fluid around the cells a condition called lymphedema.

All of the following can result in lymphedema (the accumulation of interstitial fluid due to interference with lymphatic drainage) except a. surgical removal of a group of lymph nodes. b. obstruction of lymph vessels that drain a lymph node, as might occur with a tumor or an infection. c. radiation therapy, which may cause scar formation of lymph vessels. d. exercise that increases the flow of lymph in the lymph vessels.
Which of the following is/are false about the lymphatic system?
A. It is a vascular system that takes up excess interstitial fluid and transports it to the bloodstream.
B. It drains into the circulatory system via two large ducts that drain into veins near the shoulders.
C. Among its components is the network of tiny lymphatic vessels that intermingle among capillaries of the cardiovascular system.
D. A pump delivers lymph through the lymphatics.
