Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The greenhouse effect is to be defined.
Concept introduction:
The greenhouse effect is a process in which heat is trapped by the atmospheric gases near the surface of the earth. Most of the human activities, such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels, are giving strength to greenhouse effect, which later leads to global warming.
The greenhouse effect is a process in which heat is trapped by the atmospheric gases present near the surface of the earth. The greenhouse has a roof of glass through which visible sunlight is transmitted and some of the outgoing infrared radiations are absorbed by the glass roof and heat is trapped.
Greenhouse gases are associated with the greenhouse effect. These types of gases absorb infrared radiation. These gases must be IR active for which they must undergo a change in dipole moment.
Common examples of green house gases are carbon dioxide and

- Green plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and retun oxygen to the atmosphere, even then carbon dioxide is considered to be reponsible for the greenhouse effect. Explainarrow_forward11.7. What is a greenhouse gas? Give the chemical formulas of two compounds that function as greenhouse gasesarrow_forwardGlobal warming is the long-term heating of Earth's climate system observed since the pre-industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due to natural activities which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's atmosphere.arrow_forward
- What is the greenhouse effect? How does the excess CO2 gas in the atmosphere cause the greenhouse effect?arrow_forwardUsing appropriate chemical reactions for illustration, show how calcium present as the dissolved HCO3- salt in water is easier to remove than other forms of hardness, such as dissolved CaCl2. Green plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and return oxygen to the atmosphere, even then carbon dioxide is considered to be responsible for the greenhouse effect. Explain why?arrow_forwardA N2 molecule at 20 ⁰C is released at sea level to travel upward. Assuming that the molecule does not collide with other molecules, how far will it travel before coming to rest? Do the same calculation for a He atom. Hint: to calculate the height h, the molecule will travel, equate its kinetic energy with the potential energy it attains at h, which is mgh. Here m is the mass, and g is the gravitational accelerationarrow_forward
