Concept explainers
To distinguish: Early development of protostomes from deuterostomes.
Introduction: Animal diversity and origin are the natural history about the animal forms. In the animal diversity, animals are placed according to their classification, characteristics, species, and distribution.
Explanation of Solution
In the bilateral symmetry, the single plane runs in the mid line of the body and divides into equal half or mirror image of the other half. The protostomes belong to the clade bilateral symmetry and the deuterostomes is the sub-taxon of the bilateral symmetry. During gastrulation, the blastopore is formed, which determines the triploblastic animals into two major animal groups such as protostomes and deuterostomes based on the cell pattern in the gastrulation. When the blastopore is developed, the mouth is first formed in the protostomes and the anus is formed later. In the case of deuterostomes, the anus is formed first when the blastopore is developed and the mouth is formed later.
