Introduction:
Answer to Problem 1FIB
Correct answer:
The portions of a fungus that are visible to the naked eye are often structures specialized for reproduction. These structures release tiny spores, which are dispersed to produce new fungi.
Explanation of Solution
The body of the fungus is known as mycelium which is a group of a filamentous thread like structure called hyphae. Mycelium is the vegetative structures of fungi. A single spore germinates into mycelium which reproduces asexually or sexually. When two mycelia join they form a fruiting body like a mushroom.
The fruiting body of fungi like mushroom, puffballs and other fungi grows above the ground for the dispersal of spores. A fungus reproduces by means of both sexual and asexual reproduction. All fungi reproduce by spores and disperse their offsprings in the wind. Each spore is capable of developing into whole fungi in favorable conditions.
The visible fruiting body of fungi consists of basidiospores in a mycelium structure that helps in the reproduction of all fungi.
