Chapter 22, Problem 26CYU
Summary Introduction

To review:

The components of the “mucosal barrier”.

Introduction:

The gastric juice secreted by the lining of stomach is highly acidic in nature. When compared to the blood, the H+ concentation is found 100,000 times more in stomach. The mucosal layer of the stomach is exposed to this acidic condition, considered as harshest among the entire digestive tract. Besides acidic condition, this layer is also exposed to the protein digesting enzymes having the tendency to digest the stomach cells itself. Despite all these adverse conditions, stomach remains protected by producing the mucosal barrier, which helps to withstand all these harsh environmental conditions.
