Chapter 22, Problem 2CT
Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason behind the recessive mutation would be more likely to persist in a plant with a sporophyte-dominated life cycle, such as a fern, than in a moss.

Introduction: The plants are multicellular, photosynthetic eukaryotes on land. They are close to green algae, as they have cellulosic cell walls, chloroplasts, and store starch. They have alternation of generations, that is, a haploid generation (gametophyte) alternates with a diploid generation (sporophyte). Double fertilization is the process of formation of a zygote and the endosperm in flowering plants. It occurs when a pollen tube releases two sperm cells in the ovule. One sperm cell fuses with the egg cell to form an embryo and the other sperm cell fuses with two polar bodies to form an endosperm.

While conducting a plant diversity survey in a temperate rainforest in Washington state, you come across a number of individuals of a low-lying plant species. These plants spread over the surface of moist groun and have numerous small stems that have tiny leaflets. They have root-like structures but do NOT have roots. Back at the lab, tests indicate that the majority of the plant material is haploid. The plant you discovered is likely most closely related to -a moss. -complex streptophyte algae. -a daisy -a conifer -a lycophyte
Which of the following pairs of plant structure has the haploid number ofchromosomes? A. Megaspore mother cell and antipodal cells  B. Egg cell and antipodal cells C. Egg cell and endosperms D. Microspore mother cell and antipodal cells
Which of the following is a universal feature of the life cycles of land plants? Genetically identical gametophyte and sporophyte stages Multicellular haploid and diploid gametes Morphologically identical gametophyte and sporophyte stages Alteration of generations between haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes
